(BEAVER) – The Beaver County Sheriff’s Office has put new locks on its courthouse doors after a jail guard was suspected of stealing divorce papers from the clerk’s office. The alleged theft occurred almost two years ago but representatives of the state Administrative Office of the Courts met last Thursday with the sheriff’s office to discuss the status of security at the courthouse. According to a report, a police dispatcher was viewing security cameras about 1am on July 15,2006, when he saw a jail guard enter the courtroom and then, a few minutes later, saw the guard exit and walk to his car. The dispatcher saw him unbutton the top two buttons of his uniform shirt and remove some papers and place them inside his vehicle before re-entering the building. The guard admitted he had taken the papers to his then, ex-wife but denied actually taking the court filings. No charges were filed in connection with the incident and the papers were found in the clerk’s office. The guard resigned Dec. 31, 2006. The Beaver County Sheriff’s Office has required deputies, guards and other staff to make a log entry if they enter the courthouse after hours.
