NEW YORK-Felix Hernandez hit a grand slam, becoming the first American League pitcher to do so in 37 years as the Seattle Mariners got past the New York Mets, 5-2 Monday in interleague play at Shea Stadium. Hernandez’ second inning feat was impressive not only in historical spheres, but also because it came off of Johan Santana, one of Major League Baseball’s best pitchers. Although this was only Seattle’s third win in their last 10 games, the Mariners remained perfect all-time at Shea as they are now 4-0 in Queens in their history. After Jose Lopez amassed an RBI single in the fifth, Seattle held a 5-0 lead, while the Mets finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Carlos Beltran scored on a wild pitch from Hernandez. Nevertheless, Arthur Rhodes earned the save for the Mariners, his first since 2006 when he was with the Phillies. In National League play Monday, Milwaukee humbled Atlanta, 4-1 and in other interleague action, Arizona doubled up Boston, 2-1, Kansas City pounded Colorado, 8-4, and the Los Angeles Angels edged Washington, 3-2.
