NEW YORK-Billy Wagner, who has developed an unsavory habit of speaking profanities after tough losses for the New York Mets this season has also fallen into a sordid hole on the field. The Mets closer choked in his third consecutive save opportunity as the Arizona Diamondbacks edged New York, 5-4 Thursday at Shea Stadium. Nevertheless, the loss for the Mets was a team effort as they squandered a 4-0 lead which they obtained when Fernando Tatis had a two-run single in the seventh inning for New York. However, after Johan Santana, who had 10 strikeouts in seven innings of work, retired for the day, things fell apart for the Mets. Mark Reynolds started things off for the Diamondbacks, with a two-run triple in the eighth, while Miguel Montero’s sacrifice fly in the 10th capped off the comeback for Arizona. The Diamondbacks improved to 36-31 on the season, while New York fell to 31-34 with the loss. In other MLB action Thursday, Pittsburgh pasted Washington, 7-5, Detroit doubled up the Chicago White Sox, 2-1, Milwaukee surged past Houston, 9-6, Kansas City handled Texas, 6-5, the Chicago Cubs bested Atlanta, 3-2 in 11 innings, San Francisco overpowered Colorado, 10-7, San Diego blanked the Los Angeles Dodgers, 9-0, Boston waxed Baltimore, 9-2, Cleveland decimated Minnesota, 12-2, Cincinnati stormed past St. Louis, 6-2, Philadelphia smoked Florida, 3-0, and the New York Yankees blew past Oakland, 4-1.
