Pads Take Four From Mets; Keep Recent Resurgence Alive

SAN DIEGO-Tony Clark hit a clutch three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the San Diego Padres to an 8-6 victory over the New York Mets Sunday at Petco Park which completed a four-game sweep for San Diego. This was only the latest pratfall in a nightmarish season for the Mets as they fell to 2-5 on their recent road trip to California, and must now return to Shea to face a solid Arizona squad Tuesday. The win not only capped off the Padres’ first four-game sweep of the Mets at home since 1980, it gave them eight wins in their last 11 games to improve their record to 28-37. Despite the loss, Carlos Delgado had a solid game for the Mets as he amassed three hits for the second consecutive game including the 1,900th of his career. In other MLB action Sunday, Detroit handled Cleveland, 5-2, the New York Yankees doubled up Kansas City, 6-3, Toronto edged Baltimore, 5-4, Florida smoked Cincinnati, 9-2, Philadelphia humbled Atlanta, 6-3, Boston doubled up Seattle, 2-1, San Francisco bested Washington, 6-3, Pittsburgh outlasted Arizona, 6-4, the Chicago White Sox decimated Minnesota, 12-2, St. Louis snuck past Houston, 5-4, Milwaukee tripped up Colorado, 3-2, Oakland overpowered the Los Angeles Angels, 7-3 in 12 innings, Texas stymied Tampa Bay, 6-3, and the Chicago Cubs pasted the Los Angeles Dodgers, 3-1.
