BOSTON-Paul Pierce had 28 points and eight assists while unsung Leon Powe pitched in with 21 points as the Boston Celtics held off a late Los Angeles surge to edge the Lakers 108-102 Sunday in Game 2 of the NBA Finals at TD Banknorth Garden. After three quarters wherein they failed to score more than 22 points in any period, the Lakers exploded for 41 points in the last stanza to make things a bit more interesting than Celtics coach Doc Rivers would have preferred. While he was pleased with the victory, Rivers stated after the game that he wasn’t happy with the complacency Boston showed down the stretch. While Los Angeles was perfect from the foul line and made 10 3-pointers, they only had 10 free throw attempts, while Boston netted 37 free throw attempts, making 28 which assisted them in building a big lead. Three-point shooting was also vital for Boston as the Celtics made 64 percent of their shots behind the arc. The odds are now stacked against the Lakers as out of 30 NBA Finals participants to fall behind 2-0, only three have come back to win the league crown. Incidentally, however, one of those instances occurred two years ago as the Miami Heat took four in a row from the Dallas Mavericks after falling into a 2-0 hole. Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen added 17 points apiece for the Celtics, while Kobe Bryant had 30 points and eight assists for the Lakers while Pau Gasol chipped in with 17 points and 10 rebounds for Los Angeles.
