WASHINGTON-Troy Glaus pounded a two-run homer and Albert Pujols added a pinch-hit home run as the St. Louis Cardinals gashed the Washington Nationals, 4-1 Thursday at Nationals Park. Todd Wellemeyer earned his seventh win of the year on the mound for the Cardinals, while St. Louis won their sixth game in their last eight. This was the first game of a doubleheader, which saw the Nationals gain vengeance in the nightcap with a 10-9 win in 10 innings. In other MLB action Thursday, the New York Yankees held off Toronto, 9-8, Philadelphia blanked Cincinnati, 5-0, Baltimore edged Minnesota, 3-2, Boston waxed Tampa Bay, 7-1, Atlanta outlasted Florida, 7-5, Pittsburgh handled Houston, 4-3, Texas smoked Cleveland, 9-4, the Chicago White Sox torched Kansas City, 6-2, San Diego doubled up the New York Mets, 2-1, and the Chicago Cubs bested the Los Angeles Dodgers, 5-4.
